The 2015 Annual Bossier Parish Student Art Show: Me, Myself, & Art features artworks by students from elementary, middle, and high schools in Bossier Parish. This year’s theme encourages students to create artworks that represent who they are and their personality. This may include self-portraits, their favorite color, artist, pet, place, etc. Freedom of expression is a fundamental value that art instills in students and the purpose of this show is to provide them with the opportunity to showcase their creative visions and artistic ideas through producing original works of art.

On Tuesday, December 8, 5:30 - 8 p.m. we invite students and their families to attend the opening reception and awards ceremony at the Bossier Arts Council’s East Bank Gallery. We will award $1,500 in cash prizes and this year’s Best in Show winner will have their work recreated as a piece of public art in Bossier Parish.

Parents,

Students who are Behaving Bucs (no referrals, detention, GASP, or suspension) for the fourth nine weeks are allowed to wear basketball or gym shorts tomorrow.  The shorts must come within three inches of the top of the kneecap.  Girls may wear other athletic shorts that are appropriate if they have slider or bicycle shorts underneath.  Student must bring $5 if they haven't already paid the $10 weekly fee.  We are allowing this because of our Fun Day to support American Red Cross and the tornado victims in Oklahoma.  Students will need extra money for concessions and the half court shootout!

It's that time of year again! HMS would like to invite the Haughton community out for a fun-filled weekend of art, food, and smiles at the 2013 ArtBreak Festival. Our young artists have worked very hard for Ms. Gonzalez this year, and have created hundreds of pieces of artwork which they would love to share with you.

We are especially proud to congratulate, 7th grade, Madison Shelton for winning the highly coveted "Image of ArtBreak" Award. There are thousands of works of art entered for judging before the festival begins. Of the thousands of images, the judges select up to 10 pieces which they believe capture the spirit and essence of ArtBreak. Madison's artwork entitled "Butterfly" was one of 8 pieces chosen for this prestigious honor. Madison's artwork will be made into posters and sold at the ArtBreak store during the festival. Madison's win makes it 3 years in a row that Haughton Middle School has won this prestigious award. That is definitely something to be proud of!

The festival is being held at the Shreveport Convention Center in downtown Shreveport 400 Caddo Street, 841.4000

Friday, April 26,         4:00-9:00

Saturday, April 27,   10:00-9:00

Sunday, April 28,      12:00-5:00   (The awards ceremony will begin at 3:00. Come out and support Madison Shelton's win with us)

Concession stands will be open. The Book Fair will also be open in the lobby before you enter the main ArtBreak arena. Admission is free. However, if you cannot find parking on the streets outside of the convention center, the garage charges $5.00

We hope to see you all there! GEAUX BUCS!

Rachel Joy Scott was one of the 12 victims of a school shooting at Columbine High School in 1999.  She left behind a journal full of writings and drawings that have impacted students around the world.  Shortly before her death, she wrote "I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go."  More than 18 million people have been touched by her story and have chosen to reach out to others in the community to carry out Rachel’s legacy.  Haughton Middle School has taken on Rachel’s challenge and will reach out to the community by helping with the needs at the LSUHSC-S Children’s Hospital.  If you would like to take part, below is a list of items that you can donate:

  • Art supplies, coloring books/crayons, activity books
  • Children’s books, magazines, or DVD movies
  • New toys, Play-Doh
  • Blankets, knit hats, sweaters
  • Monetary donations to help purchase much needed medical equipment

You may bring your donations the week of January 22nd- January 25th to Mrs. Burris or Mrs. Reardon during 1st hour.  You will receive a ticket for each item donated.  We will draw the names of 10 students who will have the opportunity to attend a field trip to deliver the donations and possibly volunteer some time with the kids at the hospital.

Every donation will help us make a difference in the community!

Dear Students and Parents,

I hope your summer is going well. I also hope that you are enjoying this time as you spend it with your friends and family. A strong family connection is most important in life. At Haughton Middle School we are going to strive for excellence in student achievement. We want to make learning fun and enjoyable for all learners. We also want to effectively prepare all students for the transition to high school. Throughout the course of the summer you are always free to contact one of our school administrators for questions or concerns. The dates for back to school night for parents and students will clearly be posted on our road marquee soon as well as on our website. I would like to wish our retiring principal, Susan Salter, best wishes in her retirement. She has served the children of the Haughton community faithfully for several years and will be greatly missed. At Haughton Middle School you will expect to find some of the best teachers that the Bossier Parish School Board has to offer. We have great plans for our school and community for the 2012-2013 school year. Best wishes to you all.

Congratulations Ethan Pease! We are so proud of you!

http://www.google.com/doodle4google/vote.html#d=d4-5

GOOGLE NAMES HAUGHTON STUDENT STATE WINNER

ETHAN PEASE GOES TO NATIONAL COMPETITION

If Ethan Pease ever wondered what it was like to be a rock star, he got a good idea Wednesday afternoon.

The eighth grader was the center of attention at Haughton Middle School, where representatives from Google traveled from San Francisco to make a big announcement. Ethan won the state competition in the Internet search company's "Doodle 4 Google" artwork contest. Making his win even more impressive, Ethan's artistic rendition of the Google logo was one of 114,000 entries.

His mom, Terri Pease, was on cloud nine. "We're very excited," she said. "It's so humbling to see how other people are recognizing his accomplishments. Ethan has been drawing since he was three. He has a phenomenal gift."

During the student assembly, Ethan was quick to give credit where credit was due. "I love drawing. I love art. And I can do all things through Christ," he told the audience and his peers.

The theme of this year's contest is, "If I could travel in time, I'd visit ..." Accompanying his entry, he wrote, "If I could travel in time, I'd visit the Italian Renaissance. I would meet masters of art such as Da Vinci and Michelangelo. Enjoy the Tower of Pisa before it leaned. I might see the Carnevale and enjoy the fireworks at night or visit Galileo and look at the stars."

Ethan's design incorporates the Mona Lisa, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Galileo, an artist's palette and pizza. He explained to the crowd, "I chose Italy because it's the birthplace of art and there is no better time than the Italian Renaissance."

One of the Google representatives called it "one of the coolest doodles I've seen."

Now, it's up to the public to help Ethan Pease win the national finals. On-line voting is taking place now through May 10. The highest ranking doodler will be named at an awards ceremony May 17 in New York City, and Ethan and his parents will be there.

The winner's design will be featured on the Google.com home page and the Crayola 64 crayon boxes. The winner will also receive a $30,000 college scholarship, computer equipment and a $5,000 technology stipend and be given $45,000 to donate to a public school or library in their community.

Let's all help Ethan win. Go to www.google.com/doodle4google. Click on 'state finalists' and then the 8-9 category. Look for Ethan P. -- LA and vote.

Good luck, Ethan, and congratulations for already being a winner!

Talented Arts students make their landing in Ithaca,New York.

Tuesday night at 10:30 p.m. Looooooooooong Day. Left around 11:00 a.m.

"Having a blast" says Mona Duncan. SNOWING! She just sent me a text. What a fantastic trip these four students Matthew Sargent, Jemimah Suarez ,Noel Elias and Logan Byrd are going to have -  not only the contacts they will meet but the experience of going to the leading Ornithology Lab in the world. I told her to take plenty of pictures to document their experience.

Did I mention that the selection of students for this workshop was open to the United States and abroad and We in Bossier Parish had four selected!  Did I also mention Cornell Lab of Ornithology was to select 10 students ( from the United States and abroad ) and we had FOUR!  They are all part of the Talented Arts Program and are in the Visual Arts classes at Haughton Middle and Haughton High and Parkway. There were so many people that helped make this trip possible for these deserving students. Help came from School Board Members,Principals of these schools, Parents, Teachers and the Talented Arts Program. Thanks to all of you that helped !

What a difference each of you have made in each of these children's lives .

We are continuing to collect updated immunization records for our 6thgraders.  There are still a few  students who have NOT gotten the immunizations  that are now  mandated for all eleven year olds in Louisiana.  If you received a letter and have not followed up with your physician, please do so and  send your student’s updated ‘shot record’ to the school nurse.   We will be reassessing our compliance using the Louisiana Immunization Network for Kids Statewide (LINKS) system next week and calling parents as needed.  If you have questions regarding this, please contact the school nurse.

Students at Haughton Middle School visited local churches to get a first hand view of Romanesque and Gothic building styles. The church visits were a culmination of the unit of study of the Medieval, Renaissance and Reformation periods of history. Pastors and staffs of local churches thoughtfully gave of their time in allowing the students to observe the church facilities.  The churches visited and shown in the slide show include: Holy Trinity Catholic Church, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, and St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church. Also visited but not pictured were 1st Methodist and Antioch Baptist Churches.   A Target Field Trip Grant was used to fund the trip.

The Lady Bucs softball team finished the district season with a perfect 10-0 record.  The final two games versus Greenacres and Elm Grove included plenty of action and excitement.

In the early game the Lady Bucs took on the Lady Mustangs from Greenacres.  Natalie Smith set the tone early retiring the first 5 batters she faced.  She was aided by the Lady Bucs strong defense.  Natalie struck out 2 and walked one allowing only 1 run.  Tara Irvin finished out the game with two strike outs in the final inning.  The Lady Bucs offense was firing on all cylinders with 9 different players recording hits.  Highlights included a 2 RBI Triple by Keeleigh Bennett and an RBI single by Alyssa Bonacci.  Taylor Breed, Anna Dies, Destiny Gilley, Jessica Blank, Bethany Knotts, Tara Irvin and Natalie Smith all had hits as well.  The Lady Bucs downed the Lady Mustangs 13-1 to improve to 9-0.

The second game of the evening saw the Lady Bucs facing Elm Grove.  The Lady Eagles came prepared to put up a fight and quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  The Lady Bucs failed to score in the bottom of the first and had to rely on outstanding pitching and defense to keep the game within reach.  The Lady Eagles added another run in the top of the second, but the Lady Bucs continued to display the heart and desire they have shown all season.  Abby Farmer drew a walk and Tara Irvin followed up with a single.  The Lady Eagles retired the next 2 batters then Savannah Hines delivered a clutch 2 run single to tie the game at 2 runs each.  Both teams failed to score in the third inning, and Anna Dies shut the door on the Elm Grove offense in the top of the fourth with the help of a stellar over the should catch down the left field line by shortstop Tara Irvin.  Bethany Knotts led off the bottom of the 4th with a bloop single and promptly stole second.  On the very next pitch she advanced to third on a wild pitch and stole home to win the game when she realized the catcher could not find the ball.  The Lady Bucs completed their perfect 10-0 district season with a 3-2 victory.  Anna Dies struck out 4 and walked 1 in the win.

Next up for the Lady Bucs is the Louisiana Junior High School State Championship Tournament in Monroe March 24th and 25th.

Beginning today, if you have used your 5 days to borrow a PE uniform w/o point deduction and continue to borrow PE uniforms you will go to GASP.  You will go to GASP during PE class only.  Your grade for PE will be a zero.  You receive a zero for 2 reasons, not participating and not dressing out..  This will continue to happen, if the student continues to forget their uniform.
